CFSphere is a dedicated advocacy organisation born from the urgent necessity to protect human rights, foster equality, and support the LGBT+ community within increasingly restricted environments. As an organisation operating at the intersection of legal advocacy and social support, we have faced significant challenges, including the constant threat of liquidation and legal battles within the Russian judicial system. Despite these hurdles, our commitment to the principles of civil society remains unshaken. Our History and the Fight for Civil Society

The history of CFSphere is inextricably linked to the broader struggle for civil rights in Saint Petersburg and across the Russian Federation. For years, our team—widely known as the Sphere Team—has been at the forefront of defending the rights of LGBT+ individuals and broader human rights initiatives. This path has not been easy. We have faced numerous attempts by the state to curtail our activities, most notably through the Kuibyshevsky District Court rulings which sought to dismantle our organisational structure.

In the face of these liquidation threats, we chose to stand our ground. Our legal team has filed numerous appeals, not merely to save an organisation, but to defend the very concept of an independent civil society. We believe that the existence of NGOs and advocacy groups is a litmus test for a nation’s commitment to human rights. By challenging these rulings, we highlight the legal and social consequences of the expanded LGBT propaganda ban and other restrictive measures that seek to erase the visibility of marginalised communities.

• Digital Resilience and Online Safety: In an era where the digital space is one of the few remaining avenues for free expression, we prioritise the safety of our community online. We develop and share resources on how to use artificial intelligence and encryption to protect personal data and maintain secure communication channels in restricted environments.
• Community Support and Resources: Beyond the courtroom, CFSphere is a hub for social connection. We provide help and support resources that address the psychological and social impacts of homophobia and transphobia. Our programmes are designed to foster resilience, particularly among younger Russians who are finding innovative ways to support one another in the face of adversity.
